Barrier-Free by Design: Pioneer Polyclinic Wins BCA Universal Design Gold
May 31, 2017
Pioneer Polyclinic's barrier-free healthcare design earned it the BCA Universal Design Mark Gold (Design) Award in 2017.
Pioneer Polyclinic, a 7-storey healthcare facility near Pioneer MRT station in western Singapore, won the BCA Universal Design Mark Gold (Design) Award in 2017. Designed by JGP Architecture, the building houses clinics, a laboratory and x-ray room, pharmacies, staff and support areas, healing terraces and outdoor activity spaces.
The design took a pedestrian barrier-free approach to connect the building seamlessly with the surrounding streetscape, while internal spaces were arranged around healthcare workflow and efficiency. Layouts were also planned to support patient independence, from self-registration through to health screenings, consultations and collecting medicine.
The polyclinic went on to receive a further BCA Universal Design Mark Gold Award in 2019, building on its 2017 recognition.
